General Assistance

Mission:

Caring for and improving the lives of our citizens by providing interim assistance for financial and medical needs to qualified cases.

Description:

St. Clair Township provides General Assistance (GA) to those who are not eligible for  Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) or Supplemental Security Income (SSI), and do not have the financial resources to provide for their needs. GA is a program of “last resort.” This means that you can get GA only if you can’t get any other form of public benefits. GA programs must help people meet their basic living requirements. To qualify for GA, you must have very little income and assets.

St. Clair Township provides GA in accordance with written standards provided in the General Assistance Handbook for Local Governments. These standards are applied consistently to those who apply.

HOW TO APPLY:

Visit the office (at 107 Service Street, Swansea, IL) to obtain an application. Each GA applicant is required to complete and sign an application. An appointment will then be set to discuss the application and determine what documents are needed. All applicants must provide a social security card and a valid government issued id.
