 Tax Levy Notice

St. Clair Township is planning to keep its request for taxes for next year at the same level as this year. The road part of the tax levy will decrease by $50,000 and the non-road part of the tax levy will increase by $50,000 producing no overall increase in taxes. Since the state looks at the road and non-road parts of the levy separately, the Township will publish a notice in the paper stating that the tax levy will increase by $50,000. Do not be alarmed. This notice does not include the $50,000 decrease in the road part of the tax levy. Overall, no resident of St. Clair Township will experience a tax increase paid to St. Clair Township in the upcoming year.

Please remember that St. Clair Township is not St. Clair County. Taxes paid to the Township are a very tiny part of your property tax bill. To see the actual amount of taxes you pay to St. Clair Township, look at the lines on your tax bill that are labeled ST CLAIR ROAD and ST CLAIR TWP.

The tax levy hearing will occur on December 13th at 6:45 p.m. at the Township office at 107 Service Street in Swansea. All are welcome to attend and ask questions or make comments prior to the Board of Trustee’s final vote on the levy. If you have questions or concerns regarding the tax levy, please feel free to call me at 233-3437.

Property Tax Reassessment

The St. Clair County Assessor is reassessing all of the property in St. Clair Township. Before the end of the year, the Assessor will mail you a postcard with your new property tax assessment. Your property should be assessed at 33.3% of its fair market value.

If you feel that your property reassessment is not accurate, you will have 30 days from the date your reassessment is published in the Belleville News-Democrat to file an appeal at the St. Clair County Board of Review.

All assessments are based on the information the Assessor’s office has on file regarding your property. That information is contained in a file called the “Property Record Card”.  We recommend that you print your record card now before it is updated with the new information based on the reassessment and then print it again after you receive the reassessment postcard in the mail to see if the basis of your assessment has changed.

Here is how you can get your “Property Record Card” online from the Assessor’s office at the Courthouse:

1.  Go to www.co.st-clair.il.us

2.  Hover above the “P” near the top of the page and then select Parcel Inquiry.

3.  Select Parcel Year 2010 in the drop down menu, select the address circle, type in house number and street name without including, drive, lane, court etc.  Click on Search.

4.  Click on the parcel number

5.  Lots of important Tax information about your property can be viewed on this page. To view your property record card, find and click on the “View Property Record Card (F9)” written in tiny print just below the search button.

6.  Select Open PDF (this step may vary on different computers).

7.  Review the Property Record Card for accuracy. To report errors, contact the St. Clair County Assessor’s Office at 277-6600.

8.  After you receive your reassessment postcard this fall, you can repeat the above process for Parcel Year 2011 to see if the basic information about your home has changed.

9.  You can also go to the St. Clair County Assessor’s office on the fifth floor of the courthouse and ask for a copy of your property record card.

You can use the process above to compare you property tax assessment to similar homes in your neighborhood. If you wish to appeal your property tax assessment, contact the St. Clair County Board of Review at 277-6600.
